Singham (2011) Film Review

Director Rohit Shtty sure brings a roar with his moving action, drama film ‘Singham’. From exploring real Indian Politics to impressive bravery, Singham is a true eye opener and a must-watch for all.

The film follows the brave Inspector Baijiro Singham (Ajay Devgn) whom aims to bring peace and justice to his small village. However, with cunning con men and dirty politics in place, innocent people are killed. In particular the sly Jaikant Shikre (Prakash Raj) whom gets everything he wants. With thick, gold chains around his neck, black money in his pockets and a gun in his hands, Shikre holds the power to control the society. Fooling innocent officers and causing havoc, Shikre despises such a brave officer, Singham whom becomes his latest enemy and newfound target. Shikre’s focus is to get rid of Singham by either blackmailing him or killing him. However, Singham isn’t at all convinced or lured into these unfair bribes nor afraid of the violence. He demands Shikre to act like any other criminal out there and stamp his presence everyday at the local Police Station. Yet Shikre hates the form of being controlled. He avenges on Singham and plans to take over the city, by interfering with the elections.

If you’re the lion, then I’m the hunter” – Shikre

It’s ridiculous that such looting and con men still exists in places like India. This of which Shetty realistically penetrates through the story and characters. The plot is compelling, enthralling and gripping. We are told an engaging story of which we are confronted with the hard, cold facts. Singham takes us on the journey of survival and justice. Equally we are shown both the good and innocent side of the officers, thus intertwined with the political treaties with selfish motives. Singham reminds me of a cat and mouse chase, but this times it’s the tiger Vs the lion. Shikre Vs Singham. A criminal Vs an Officer. A true test of rivalry.

“Majhi satakli re”

Ajay Devgn fully dwells into the role of Officer Baijiro Singham. His braveness and determination shines through his stoic persona. Singham’s serious stance and facial expressions add to his uniform and heroic figure. The true and goodness through his soul is evident. The action scenes were full of intensity, whereby we are eager for Singham to defeat the villains. Singham holds honesty in his heartand believes in justice, he doesn’t get his job title get the best of him. He truly is the hero of his village.

Likewise, Prakash Raj also gives 100% through his performance as Shikre. His cunning and horrific, unpleasant tricks are remarkably well acted out. We truly despise his character. As the antagonists, his sharp claws are profoundly evident, where he truly becomes the tiger. Shikre, the villain represents all the con men out there in India. His creepy laughs and aggressive attitude not only gives you the chills but makes you gawk at his remarkable performance.

Mere saath kuch bhi karneka … mera ego hurt nahi karneka

Overall, Singham honestly provides a true insight on the dirty politics and power issues in India. With a war against Officers and criminals, we are shown the core vessel of binary oppositions. Indeed, politics mixed with religion doesn’t go very well and neither do con men and officers. Selfishness, bribary and power are top scores in India and well the inequality is evident. The comedic twists bring in light humour and the romance gives Singham some personal life. Credits to Shetty with the whole production, moving tale and of course a brilliant cast.

There have been rumours of Singham 2, releasing in 2014. Keep an eye out.

My Rating: 9/10

    1. Lol thanks for that. Indeed, it was a great film, Prakash Raj is a brilliant actor. Yes, the jumping cars and slow moitioned action was slightly irritating, but a great story line. Thanks for commenting 😀
